by

published 25 May 2015

The Integrating maternal and newborn care: Strengthening the continuum side event saw the joint launch of the Every Newborn Action Plan one year progress report and the Strategies towards Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality report. With strong country-level support, Health Ministers from Malawi, Cameroon and Peru were present and stressed how useful these reports are to their post-2015 health sector planning.

Countries are taking forward the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health by strengthening maternal and newborn health programmes.

Every Newborn Action Plan

Based on the Every Newborn Lancet paper series, led by researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Topical Medicine’s Maternal, Adolescent, Reproductive and Child Health (MARCH) Centre, the Every Newborn Action Plan has seen progress since its launch last year:

Fifteen of 18 low-resource countries identified as having the highest newborn mortality rates have taken action to improve maternal and newborn care around the time of birth and to save lives…. at least four countries – Ghana, India, Indonesia and Pakistan – have finalised national newborn action plans and an additional six countries – Namibia, Philippines, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia – have improved their health programs to save the lives of women and newborns Summary of Every Newborn Action Plan progress report, Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health

Strategies towards Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality

The targets and strategies in this report are grounded in a human rights approach to maternal and newborn health, and focus on eliminating significant inequities that lead to disparities in access, quality and outcomes of care within and between countries. The side event helped galvanise momentum towards concrete political commitments and financial investments by country governments and development partners to meet the targets and carry out the strategies outlined in the report.
