Community-Based Newborn Care (CBNC) is a national Ethiopian initiative launched in 2013 as a means of bringing life-saving care to mothers and newborns at the community level within the Ethiopian health system.
CBNC aims to improve newborn survival through the strengthening of Primary Health Care Units and the Health Extension Programme. The CBNC package includes the delivery of injectable antibiotics at the community level to improve case-management of newborn sepsis.
IDEAS collaborated with the Ministry of Health Ethiopia and JaRco Consulting to evaluate the CBNC programme through a series of quantitative surveys and qualitative assessments over five years. A final evaluation report was published in 2019, along with two infographics providing information on contextual factors influencing child growth and development, and a comparison of figures from 2013 and 2017.
