IDEAS aims to improve the health and survival of mothers and babies through generating evidence to inform policy and practice. Working in Ethiopia, North-Eastern Nigeria and the states of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in India, IDEAS uses measurement, learning and evaluation to find out what works, why and how in maternal and newborn health programmes.
IDEAS is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. IDEAS is a member of the School's Centre for Evaluation and Maternal, Adolescent, Reproductive and Child Health (MARCH) Centre.
The IDEAS team is primarily based in London with 3 staff working overseas, in Ethiopia, North-Eastern Nigeria and Uttar Pradesh. IDEAS works closely with two kinds of partner in each country:
- Measurement, learning and evaluation partner: contracted to support IDEAS' work.
- Implementation project: one of several projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation implementing innovations to improve maternal and newborn health within the existing health system.
